Prachatice, Neumanneum - Gallery of reconciliation and searchi Back
Information
The gallery is located in the entrance hall of the monastery. The impetus for the establishment of the gallery were the events at the end of World War II which took place right here. Residents of German nationality were concentrated in house no. 142 before being deported to Germany, and the Borromeo Sisters took care of them.
We feel the importance to pass on to young people a historical memory of situations that we would not want to be repeated in history. Young people are seen in every nation as its hopes and future. It is through their eyes that we would like to seek and find new ways and solutions from the difficult pre-war and post-war period with which the Sudetenland is still marked. The ways of reconciliation and hope are perceived here through the eyes of school children; the gallery therefore presents not only facts from the State Archive and the work of experts, but also the point of view of the hearts of ordinary people. And the cooperation of a both nations’ new generations which will hopefully contribute to future peaceful coexistence. At present, the gallery shows pictures and various reflections from Czech pupils of the Vodňanská primary school in Prachatice. The texts are translated into German. The children have talked to the surviving Sudeten witnesses and at the same time discussed the topic in class. In November of this year, students at the grammar school in Grafenau will bring their works. This will be an opportunity for all involved to discuss the topic again and at the same time practice the German language. The whole project started in May at a joint meeting in Grafenau and we believe that the friendship between the two schools will continue.
